Small Group Outdoor Climbing Games196
Outdoor climbing is a great way to get kids active and challenge them both physically and mentally. It can also be a lot of fun! Here are a few games that you can play with a small group of kids outdoors.
Name That Hold
This game is a great way to help kids learn the different types of climbing holds. To play, simply call out the name of a hold (e.g., "jug," "crimp," "slopey") and have the kids race to find it on the wall. The first kid to touch the hold wins a point. You can keep score or just play for fun.
Simon Says Climb
This game is a variation on the classic game of Simon Says. To play, give the kids a series of climbing commands, such as "Simon says, 'climb up to the next hold,'" or "Simon says, 'reach for the star hold.'" The kids must only follow the commands that begin with "Simon says." If a kid follows a command that doesn't begin with "Simon says," they lose a point.
Red Light, Green Light, Climb
This game is similar to the classic game of Red Light, Green Light, but with a climbing twist. To play, have the kids line up at the bottom of a climbing wall. Call out "Green light!" and the kids can start climbing. When you call out "Red light!" the kids must freeze in place. If a kid moves after you call out "Red light," they lose a point.
Follow the Leader Climb
This game is a great way to help kids develop their climbing skills. To play, choose one kid to be the leader. The leader climbs up the wall and the other kids follow behind, trying to copy the leader's moves as closely as possible. The first kid to reach the top of the wall wins.
Climbing Charades
This game is a fun way to get kids thinking creatively and using their imaginations. To play, write down a list of different climbing moves (e.g., "crimp," "dyno," "mantel"). Then, have the kids take turns acting out the moves while the other kids guess what they're doing. The first kid to guess the correct move wins a point.
Safety First
When playing climbing games with kids, it's important to put safety first. Make sure that the kids are all wearing helmets and that they are supervised by an experienced adult. Also, be sure to choose climbing walls that are appropriate for the kids' skill level.
Have Fun!
Most importantly, have fun! Climbing games are a great way to get kids active, challenge them both physically and mentally, and have a lot of fun.
