Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the parts of an outdoor picnic folding umbrella.
Students will be able to assemble and disassemble an outdoor picnic folding umbrella.
Students will be able to safely use an outdoor picnic folding umbrella.

Materials:
Outdoor picnic folding umbrellas (one per student)
Cones or markers
Whistle

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin by asking students if they have ever seen an outdoor picnic folding umbrella. Explain that these umbrellas are designed to provide shade and protection from the sun and rain while you are eating outdoors. Discuss the importance of using umbrellas safely.

2. Parts of an Umbrella (10 minutes)

Show students an outdoor picnic folding umbrella and have them identify the different parts. The parts of an umbrella include:
Canopy
Ribs
Spokes
Shaft
Ferrule
Tip

3. Assembling an Umbrella (15 minutes)

Have students follow these steps to assemble their umbrellas:
Open the umbrella and hold the shaft firmly with one hand.
With your other hand, push the ribs up and out until they click into place.
Secure the canopy by snapping the spokes into the ferrule.
Check to make sure the umbrella is securely assembled.

4. Disassembling an Umbrella (10 minutes)

Have students follow these steps to disassemble their umbrellas:
Close the umbrella.
Unsnap the spokes from the ferrule.
Push the ribs down and in until they are collapsed.
Fold the canopy.

5. Practice Using Umbrellas (15 minutes)

Set up a course using cones or markers. Have students practice opening and closing their umbrellas as they walk through the course. Encourage them to use the umbrellas safely and to be aware of their surroundings.

6. Safety Rules (5 minutes)

Review the following safety rules for using outdoor picnic folding umbrellas:
Always open the umbrella in a safe location.
Never open an umbrella in high winds.
Be aware of your surroundings and do not swing the umbrella around.
Never leave an umbrella unattended.

7. Assessment (5 minutes)
