Ultimate Outdoor Skiing Adventure Log: Banff National Park, Canada312
Outdoor Skiing Activity Record Card
Date: February 14th - 18th, 2024
Location: Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Specifically, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Norquay Ski Resort.
Participants: Myself (John Smith), Jane Doe, David Lee.
Objective: To experience the diverse skiing terrain and breathtaking scenery of Banff National Park, focusing on both on-piste and off-piste (with appropriate safety measures) skiing.
Day 1 (February 14th): Sunshine Village – On-Piste Exploration
We arrived in Banff in the late afternoon, checked into our cozy cabin rental, and spent the evening preparing our gear and reviewing avalanche safety protocols. Sunshine Village was our chosen destination for Day 1, renowned for its extensive groomed runs and stunning views. The weather was crisp and sunny with minimal wind. We spent the day exploring the Goat's Eye mountain area, focusing on intermediate runs. Jane and David, who are more experienced skiers, tackled some of the steeper blues, while I focused on refining my technique on gentler slopes. The snow conditions were excellent – light and powdery, providing a smooth and enjoyable ride. We took several breaks to appreciate the panoramic vistas of the Bow Valley. We ended the day feeling exhilarated and ready for more. Total vertical descent: approximately 15,000 feet. Notable runs included: "Great Divide," "Wildflower," and "West Bowl." No incidents reported.
Day 2 (February 15th): Lake Louise Ski Resort – A Mix of Terrain
Lake Louise is known for its iconic lake and challenging terrain. The morning started with a stunning sunrise over the lake, painting the mountains in a fiery orange hue. We chose to tackle a variety of runs, from challenging blacks on the front side to gentler blues and greens near the village. David attempted a few mogul runs, displaying impressive skill. I attempted a steeper black run, "Wi-Fi," which proved a significant challenge, testing my stamina and technique. The afternoon was spent enjoying the more leisurely runs, taking in the breathtaking scenery. The snow conditions were slightly firmer than Sunshine, but still enjoyable. We stopped for lunch at the Whitehorn Bistro, indulging in delicious alpine fare. Total vertical descent: approximately 18,000 feet. Notable runs included: "Wi-Fi," "Larch," and "Paradise." No incidents reported. We carefully assessed avalanche risk before venturing off the groomed trails.
Day 3 (February 16th): Norquay Ski Resort – Night Skiing and Apres-Ski
Norquay offers a more intimate skiing experience compared to the larger resorts. We chose to spend the day exploring its varied terrain, including some excellent tree runs. The afternoon was dedicated to night skiing, a unique and magical experience under the stars. The snow was well-maintained, and the illuminated slopes created a festive atmosphere. After skiing, we enjoyed a well-deserved apres-ski at the Cliffhouse Bistro, enjoying drinks and live music with fellow skiers. Total vertical descent: approximately 10,000 feet. Notable runs included: "Easy Street" and various tree runs off the "North American" lift. No incidents reported. We practiced safe night skiing techniques, including staying within designated areas and maintaining awareness of others.
Day 4 (February 17th): Off-Piste Adventure (Sunshine Village) – Guided Tour
Today was dedicated to off-piste skiing, but importantly, *only* with a certified guide. Safety is paramount when venturing outside designated areas. We booked a guided tour with a reputable company, "Banff Adventures," which provided avalanche safety training, gear checks, and expert guidance throughout the day. The tour took us into the backcountry of Sunshine Village, accessing incredible powder stashes inaccessible to regular skiers. We learned about avalanche awareness, rescue techniques, and safe travel in the backcountry. The experience was exhilarating and rewarding, but highlighted the importance of professional guidance and proper safety protocols in such challenging terrain. Total vertical descent: approximately 12,000 feet. No incidents reported. All safety protocols were strictly followed.
Day 5 (February 18th): Departure
After a final breakfast overlooking the stunning mountain scenery, we packed our gear and departed Banff. We reflected on an incredible five-day skiing adventure, filled with unforgettable experiences, breathtaking views, and challenging runs. The trip solidified our passion for skiing and reinforced the importance of preparation, safety, and respect for the mountain environment.
Gear Used:
• Salomon X-Pro 100 Ski Boots
• Rossignol Soul 7 HD Skis
• Black Diamond avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe (used on off-piste day)
• Arc'teryx ski jacket and pants
• Outdoor Research gloves and beanie
• Smith Optics ski goggles
Overall Assessment:
The trip to Banff National Park was an outstanding success. The variety of terrain across the three ski resorts provided a perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment. The snow conditions were excellent throughout the trip. The guided off-piste experience was both thrilling and educational, reinforcing the importance of safety in the backcountry. We highly recommend this destination for skiers of all levels.
Recommendations:
• Book accommodations and lift tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
• Pack layers of clothing to adjust to changing weather conditions.
• Purchase travel insurance that covers skiing activities.
• Consider taking a lesson or refresher course to improve technique.
• For off-piste skiing, always hire a certified guide.
